Regional Teaching Service – Auckland Northland

Children and young people who are Deaf and hearing impaired in the region from Pukekohe to the Far North (excluding those who have KDEC as their school of enrolment) may be eligible to receive this service.

Eligible students must be Deaf or hearing impaired and have moderate needs, or be verified under the Ongoing and Reviewable Resourcing Scheme (ORRS). We provide a range of teaching and specialist services for eligible students which is decided on the basis of individual need, and recognises the importance of language, communication and culture to a student’s success.

There are currently 26 Resource Teachers of the Deaf working in the Auckland and Northland areas. Teachers are based in Kaikohe, Whangarei, Kelston and Pukekohe. Resource Teachers of the Deaf assist students enrolled in mainstream schools to access the New Zealand Curriculum.

Priority is given to:

·         Specialist 1:1 teaching
·         Assistance to classroom teachers for curriculum adaptation and delivery
·         Specialist advice, guidance and assistance for classroom environment and management
·         Assisting classroom teachers with the assessment of learning outcomes involving language and literacy achievement

Applications for RTD service are prioritised each term.
