The growth point of the harakeke (flax) is at its centre:
This represents the student
Harakeke grows outwards from the centre, supporting the centre leaves:
These leaves represent the communities surrounding the student
Finally, the outer, older, leaves fall and enrich the earth and the plant:
The values, wisdom and traditions of the communities are strong

Within the School of Kelston Deaf Education Centre we believe that all students have the right to be together and be proud of whom they are.
We recognise our responsibility to provide effective distributive leadership and quality learning environments, including a strong sense of ‘being Deaf’, to ensure that students acquire the academic, vocational and life skills necessary to become productive citizens in a rapidly changing world.
We are committed to:
· Providing a state funded education to students who are deaf and hard of hearing.
· Promoting excellence in teaching and learning programmes from Year 1 - 15.
· Raising achievement using appropriate resources and strategies with a view to success for all students through opportunities to gain the knowledge, skills, attitudes and values identified in the New Zealand Curriculum Framework and the National Curriculum Statements.
· Improving learning outcomes and reducing disparities for Maori , Pasifika and other new immigrant students.
