New Zealand Sign Language (NZSL) and English are the two principal languages used in Totara Village. NZSL is the primary method of communication used in the cottages. English is used to assist residents to acquire strong literacy skills.
While we support and respect all forms of communication, your child will be encouraged to use NZSL in the village.
We want to ensure that you can communicate easily with your child: Phone, TTY and Video conferencing are available to assist you to communicate with your child.

Relay Service
NZ Relay is a service supported by the New Zealand government that provides free relay service between Deaf or Hearing Impaired callers and Hearing callers. You can speak to your son, daughter or Deaf staff member through the Relay using your phone.
