Individual Education Programme (IEP)
|
The Individual Education Programme (also known as an Individual Education Plan) is a programme developed for students with special education needs. It outlines the student's goals, and the teaching strategies, resources, monitoring, support, and the evaluation needed to enable the student to meet those goals.
lThe IEP’s at KDEC are reviewed at least twice a year in a meeting with parents/caregivers, and the same support team that developed the plan. Parents/caregivers will receive a copy of the revised programme after each meeting.
At KDEC all enrolled students require an IEP to be written and followed as the underpinning document of their educational programme.
lThis programme is developed in a meeting between parents/caregivers, the student's teacher, the student (if they wish to attend: encouraged from at least Year 7 onwards) and specialists as appropriate. The aim is to identify current strengths, to set short and long term goals together for the student, and record their learning progress.
It is also to identify:
· teaching practices that will help the child learn
· changes that need to be made to the way the curriculum is taught for that child, and to resources and materials
· any additional or specialised equipment the child needs
· the best way to provide personal care, where required
· how parents/caregivers and families/whanau can support the school learning programme at home
· how the school can support the home programme at school
· timeframes, responsibilities, and
· ways to monitor and evaluate a child's progress towards reaching goals
lThis is a team meeting providing the opportunity for those involved with a child’s learning to discuss needs and set goals. Emphasis on the family and team members working together to meet the needs of your child.
l
Year 1 - 8 students at Kelston Deaf Education Centre units will usually have two IEP’s developed each year -Term 1 and Term 3.
lYear 9 - 15 students usually have one IEP each year and if they are already attending High School or Transition will have their following years IEP at the end of the current year they are in.
lStudents who are new to High School or Transition will have theirs in Term 1.
l
Specialist Service providers from KDEC (as above) will contribute to goals and wherever possible attend the IEP meeting.
Parents / caregivers will receive a copy of the revised programme after each meeting.
