These units are designed to provide access to the curriculum, support and teaching programmes to students in Year 9 - 13.

Students are enrolled at Kelston Deaf Education Centre and are attached to the roll at their partner school to allow access to timetabling and the student database.

Our staff include:
Teachers of the Deaf, Educational Interpreters, Educational Associates and Language assistants - according to student need

Our role in these units is to provide:
·
Access to the New Zealand curriculum
·
A safe environment
·
An environment conducive to learning
· Encouragement towards being independent

Students attend classes in the mainstream and/or the Deaf unit.

Students are able to choose a learning pathway that allows them to make career choices in the future. They have access to all Learning areas of the New

Zealand curriculum and options offered by their partner schools.

The Deaf Unit classes specialise in teaching English, ESOL, NZSL

Deaf Studies and South Pacific Education courses as well as offering classes in other subjects according to need.  Students are able to gain credits for Unit standards and Achievement standards for NCEA Level 1, 2 and 3.

We provide opportunities for students to take part in activities that are an every day part of college life:

· Join a sports’ team
·
Belong to a cultural group
·
Take part in evenings that are supported by the community
· Take part in and be part of activities relating to Kelston Deaf Education Centre
