What is Ka Hikitia?

Ka Hikitia is the Maori Education Strategy 2008 - 2012. It sets out the Ministry of Education's approach to achieving educational success for and with Maori over the next five years.

Ka Hikitia means to 'step up', to 'lift up' or to strengthen one's stride.

Educational Outcomes for Maori

1. Maori learners working with others to determine successful learning and education pathways.

2. Maori learners excel and successfully realising their cultural distinctiveness and potential.

3. Maori learners successfully participating and contributing to te ao Maori.

4. Maori learners gaining the universal skills and knowledge needed to successfully participate and contribute to Aoteoroa New Zealand and the world.

Actions:

Promoting ECE participation.
Support Iwi/whanau to engage and participate in ECE and early years schooling.

Attend school
Have strong literacy and numeracy knowledge and skills
Help teachers make decisions that affect the quality of the student's education
Make responsible choices about their future education pathways

Actions:

Ensuring better sharing of best practice by high performing professional leaders who are lifting Maori achievement.
Sharpening actions and strategies to ensure Maori students stay at school and are engaing in successful learning that leads to meaningful achievement.

Maori Language Education

Maori learners can access the Maori language education options they want
Build matauranga and knowledge of tikanga Maori
See the broad value of te reo Maori in society
Develop quality te reo Maori through proficiency, accuracy and complexity

Actions:

Strengthen the range of programnmes and incentives for schools so that teachers can engage in high quality professional development to improve their proficiency in te reo Maori.
Review processes for establishment of kura to ensure funding, resources, teaching and support provide the best conditions for teaching and learning.

Leadership - Stronger leadership and relationships within and across the governement and education sector.

Accountability for Outcomes

Confident People - Increasing the confidence of people who work with Maori, and their capability to effectively deliver for and with Maori students, whanau, iwi and communities.
