The koru represents the student. It is in the middle. The student is central and what we focus on. It therefore stands at the front of the logo. The koru is unfurling representing the opportunity for growth.

The two strands of flax are on either side of the student: one represents the student's whanau, the other represents the professionals who work at KDEC. Together the strands create a cocoon, providing a nurturing environment for the student where he or she can grow and achieve.

The flax strands also symbolise two hands forming the NZSL sign for 'communication'. We value the importance of all  varying modes of communication in the education of our students.

The weaving at the base is called taki tahi which means by one, singly or together. It demonstrates how the centre works in collaboration and partnership with families to provide a strong and supportive foundation for the educational growth and development of the students.

E Hara taku toa I te toa taki tahi, Engari he toa taki tini - My success is not accomplished alone but through many. 

The height of the overall design symbolises the KDEC values of achievement, aspiration, advancement, pride, vision, confidence, growth, excellence, success and progress.

The KDEC logo is natural, organic and uniquely New Zealand.
